ISBA appoints Catherine Spencer OBE as new Chief Executive

03 March 2026

ISBA is delighted to announce the appointment of Catherine Spencer as its new Chief Executive. She will take up the role on May 1st 2026.

Catherine brings a distinguished track record of executive leadership across the charitable and membership sectors.

Most recently, she served as Chief Executive Officer of The Cochrane Collaboration, the global membership organisation renowned for advancing evidence-based healthcare. During her tenure there, she led strategic modernisation initiatives, supported operational stabilisation, and helped position the organisation for long-term growth and accessibility.

Amanda Webb, Chair of ISBA, said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Catherine to ISBA. She is an accomplished leader with a strong track record in strategic development, governance, and leading complex charitable and membership organisations through periods of change. Her collaborative approach, experience of engaging with government and regulators, and credibility as a spokesperson make her exceptionally well-placed to build on the achievements of David Woodgate.”

Catherine Spencer OBE said:

“Independent schools make a profound contribution to this country and I am honoured to join ISBA at such an important time in its history. As the sector navigates significant external pressures, its membership organisations play an increasingly important role in amplifying schools’ voices, sharing expertise, and championing excellence. I look forward to working with members, partners, and colleagues to build on the organisation’s strong foundations and advance its mission, recognising and supporting the outstanding work bursars and senior business leaders deliver in schools every day.”
